Most enterprise data platforms don’t start with a clean architecture. They start with good intentions, time pressure, and compromises that harden into “production.”

In this first post of The EDP Blog Series, I walk through stepping into a Data Architect role after years as a Lead DBA — inheriting a so-called data warehouse that was really just a collection of tables and views running on a production OLTP cluster.

This post focuses on identifying the earliest technical and business pain points: uncontrolled code changes, poor deployment practices, and a warehouse that lacked even the basic elements of dimensional design. These observations set the stage for the architectural decisions that follow later in the series.
